WorkInConfidence’s Survey (former Understand & Learn) module offers a number of different survey types for you to choose from and will depend on what outcomes you are looking for. This page goes through the different types to help you choose.
Pulse Surveys
A Pulse survey (sometimes called an employee pulse survey) is perfect for when you want a quick and easy way to check the health of the organisation (hence ‘pulse’). They are easy to create and for the individual to respond to as they only have one question. Perfect for:
- checking sentiment on a particular topic
- seeing how successful a new initiative is
- following up to a longer staff survey.
Completion time for the user: Less than 30 seconds.
Question Types:
- 5 point Smiley scale
Mini Surveys
Mini surveys are designed for when you need to get a little more information on a single topic perhaps in response to feedback from a longer survey. These surveys include three question types and allow you to segment the responses on selection such as location. Perfect for:
- following up on a particular theme in a staff or long survey
- seeking more information if a pulse highlights an issue
- standard questionnaires such as exit surveys.
Completion time for the user: less than 2 minutes.
Question Types:
- Five point Smiley Scale
- Single-Select Pick List
- Multi-Select Pick List
- Free text
- Rating Scale (4, 5, 10 & 11 & scales)
- Yes/No

A Long survey (often associated with a full staff survey) is great for when you have a range of topics that you want to seek feedback on. They typically have ten or more questions made up of a variety of types and can be grouped into sections. They require more time by the respondent. Perfect for:
- an annual staff survey
- seeking feedback on a new initiative
- getting information on service from clients.
Completion time for the user: 10+ minutes.
